A “rain event” in Minneapolis, May 20, 1989, shows a Minneapolis Fire ladder crew passing the intersection of 35th Street at Clinton Ave. S.
During heavy rainfall, the storm sewer blows like a geyser in the median of I-35W in south Minneapolis. The resulting water quickly fills a low-lying portion of the interstate, thereby submerging motor vehicles. This photo is looking southeast at about 42nd street. While this particular incident occurred in 1989, it has been repeated on many occasions over the years. You can see the tops of several cars which are totally submerged.
