Types
The state prison system consists of high, medium, and low security levels. State prisoners can be transferred to prisons in other states. Minnesota also has several federal prisons. Local jurisdiction incarceration facilities include jails at the county level and sometimes even the city level. Some counties have lease agreements with ICE (Immigration) authorities. In addition, some counties have a juvenile detention system, which is separate from the adult jails or prisons, but when juveniles are certified as adult and convicted, they can be sent to adult prisons.
